POOL LANDSCAPING FAQ'S
Is landscaping included in my pool design?
Each pool design includes landscaping and outdoor living features designed by our experiences, professional designers. Nelson Pools works side by side with Nelson Landscaping as a one-stop-shop for all of your pool, landscaping, and outdoor living needs. Each design is custom and specific to the clients preferences and budget. Projects may also be done in phases.
I’m considering adding a pool, outdoor living, and landscaping. In what order should I proceed?
We’d love to connect and provide you with a master plan (design) for your project. When possible, we prefer for the construction process to begin with the pool since it requires access for large equipment and machines, followed by outdoor living, and then landscaping.
Do you plant year-round? If so, when is the best time to plant?
We plant year round! The enemy of new landscaping is heat, not cold. When planting in the summer, we ensure that your new plants have the extra water they will need to survive the summer heat. We consider the fall and winter the best times of the year to plant because it allows the root systems of each plant and tree to fully develop and get established before the summer heat returns.
How can I ensure privacy around my swimming pool using landscaping?
Privacy can be created with hedges, tall shrubs, and trees. You can’t go wrong with any combination or mass planting of Junipers, Hollies, Cedars, Pines, or Boxwoods to help offer privacy and keep the backyard looking full through the winter. Combining these with a privacy screen, fence, or an ivy covered trellis can further enhance the privacy and beauty of your outdoor space.
Which trees are ideal for providing shade around a pool without shedding leaves?
Choose evergreen trees that provide year-round shade without shedding excessive leaves. Some great options include Junipers, Hollies, Cedars, Pines, or Boxwoods. These trees have minimal leaf drop, are resistant to pests, and add a lush feel to your pool area. Grasses are another great option for planting around pools because they grab leaves around the base which helps for easy clean-up. Grasses also add a visual motion to the landscape that complements the movements of water.
Are there any plants I should avoid using near a swimming pool?
Avoid plants that shed a lot of leaves, flowers, or fruits, as well as those with invasive root systems. Deciduous trees like oak and maple can drop leaves into the pool, making maintenance more difficult. Plants with aggressive roots, like willows and certain types of bamboo, should also be avoided as they can damage pool structures. Families with young children may also want to avoid plants with sharp points or thorns.
Beyond trees, plants, and flowers, what can you add to enhance my space?
Nelson Pools and Nelson Landscaping have over 25 years of experience creating beautiful outdoor spaces for our clients. To enhance and customize each outdoor living for practicality and beauty are we often use: pergolas, pavilions, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, fireplaces, seating areas, walkways, landscape lighting, and more.
Does landscaping have a good return on investment (ROI)?
Bob Vila and other experts highlight the significant return on investment (ROI) that quality landscaping can provide for homeowners. According to Vila, a well-designed landscape can increase a home’s value by up to 20%. This means that investing in landscaping not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of a property but can also offer substantial financial benefits when selling the home. Additionally, he suggests that spending about 3-5% of your home’s value on landscaping can yield a return of 150% or more. These figures underscore the importance of landscaping as a crucial aspect of home improvement, with potential gains far outweighing the initial costs. However, it’s crucial to plan your landscaping carefully, as certain features can detract from a home’s value. Overgrown trees, poor design choices, or features that require excessive maintenance can negatively impact your return. Ensuring your landscaping is cohesive, easy to maintain, and visually appealing is key to maximizing your investment.
